18-December update
25 - 31 December 2002 (206)

Last week...

(1) A co-worker needed clear passage to get personal household belongings out of the West Bank in order move to Gaza. These few days warranted your intercession for this to happen, so guess what? It happened, much to the amazement of several folks as potential border closures never happened. I *know* the reasons behind that, and I thank you for being so faithful in interceding : -)

(2) You prayed for Jasmine as she adjusted to a new "play schedule"... She came home one day full of Bible stories and told them all - as one long story. I think she's learning 'history' to be "His-story"

(3) I asked for some continued prayer for those boxes as I'd making headway... I think I have shred enough paper to fill a 55-gallon drum. Two verses of Scripture lit up during my daily Quiet Times:

Hebrews 6:10, "For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister."

Jeremiah 18:4, "And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it."

This week...

(1) We'll need advanced and ongoing prayer for approval on our visas, even though you've already paid for them. [Your weekly tithe makes a big difference!] I was told to return around the end of October/beginning of November once a 'background check' was done. Ask God to grant such permission for our stay.

(2) The co-worker you prayed for who needed personal goods moved out of the West Bank now stands in need of getting those goods to her new home in Gaza, but it's not as easy as it sounds. Pray that her household goods be allowed quick entry into Gaza with *no* difficulty whatsoever.

(3) I have been trying to lose weight since we've returned and am encountering "the wall." I've dropped about 21 lbs but haven't seen any more go since about mid-August. I'd like to lose another 20-30 lbs so I could drop below 200 lbs. [In case you're wondering, I was at around 250 last November and after seven months in the US hovered at 247. My total cholesterol was 117 with the HDL at 26 and the LDL at 58, whatever that means.] I've been holding myself accountable to a co-worker but, now that I've hit this plateau, I want to be held accountable to you as well. What that will mean, of course, is that I must continue my weekly weigh-in and share that here - another good motivator : -)

So... join me this week in asking that I would remain obedient to keeping my body as God's temple (Acts 7:48; 17:24), that I would continue to refrain from eating after 8pm, that I would continue to drink 3 quarts/liters of water a day, and that I would *begin* exercising.

(4) My youngest sister and her husband celebrate their first wedding anniversary this week. Pray that they would hear His voice to make "chapel visits" a weekly habit.

On a personal note, I found the following email appropriate in light of recent news events. I hope you do, too:

"Because this nation has violated the covenant that I laid down for their forefathers...I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died" Jud. 2:20-21.

God commanded Israel to conquer all the peoples of Canaan and to assume possession of all the land. But the years were long and the battles hard, and Israel settled for less. Those nations left unconquered became their snare and eventually their conquerors. So today, when we reject or adulterate God's commands, our sins become the snares which frustrate God's blessings to us and through us. In particular, those peoples from whom we withhold the blessings of the gospel may become strong, bitter enemies of Jesus and His church.

O God, help us not to grow weary in taking Your gospel to those people groups still needing to hear.

I enjoyed 16-October:

The Key to the Master’s Orders

Pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest —Matthew 9:38

The key to the missionary’s difficult task is in the hand of God, and that key is prayer, not work—that is, not work as the word is commonly used today, which often results in the shifting of our focus away from God. The key to the missionary’s difficult task is also not the key of common sense, nor is it the key of medicine, civilization, education, or even evangelization. The key is in following the Master’s orders—the key is prayer. "Pray the Lord of the harvest . . . ." In the natural realm, prayer is not practical but absurd. We have to realize that prayer is foolish from the commonsense point of view.

From Jesus Christ’s perspective, there are no nations, but only the world. How many of us pray without regard to the persons, but with regard to only one Person—Jesus Christ? He owns the harvest that is produced through distress and through conviction of sin. This is the harvest for which we have to pray that laborers be sent out to reap. We stay busy at work, while people all around us are ripe and ready to be harvested; we do not reap even one of them, but simply waste our Lord’s time in over-energized activities and programs. Suppose a crisis were to come into your father’s or your brother’s life—are you there as a laborer to reap the harvest for Jesus Christ? Is your response, "Oh, but I have a special work to do!" No Christian has a special work to do. A Christian is called to be Jesus Christ’s own, "a servant [who] is not greater than his master" ( John 13:16 ), and someone who does not dictate to Jesus Christ what he intends to do. Our Lord calls us to no special work—He calls us to Himself. "Pray the Lord of the harvest," and He will engineer your circumstances to send you out as His laborer.
